Local manufacturers and marketers of adire batik fabrics in Abeokuta have threatened to invoke the metaphysical powers of their traditional deity against Chinese businessmen who are attempting to take over their age long business with the production of inferior Adire fabrics. Adire and Kampala fabrics widely accepted to be the traditional initiative of the Egbas (of Ogun state).
This threat was handed down at a press conference held at Alake Palace in Abeokuta yesterday to announce the 35th Lisabi Day celebration scheduled to hold between February 28-March 6, 2022. The Alake, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo was asked about his view on the encroachment of the Chinese in the production of Adire, which they now import into the country in large quantities. He expressed displeasure over the development, calling on the Egbas, to rise up to the challenge. He then called on Iyaloja of Egbaland, Chief (Mrs) Kemi Oloyede to also comment on the issue. In her response, the Iyaloja could not hide her anger over what she described as invasion by the Chinese into the Adire business and declared that those in the business have already agreed to approach the deity on need to intervene.
‘We are going to report the Chinese to the deity at Olumo rock, as we prepare for the Lisabi Day. It is no hidden fact that, production of Adire is the initiative of Egbas, and till date, we are in charge’, she declared Those ones being produced by Chinese are fake, which does not last or have any durability and quality. We won’t allow them to take over our heritage and glory. As I said, we are going to report them to the deity’, she emphasized
Oloyede said the Chinese have been faking locally-made Egba Adire with inferior and skin-itching materials, adding that there was need for all Adire manufacturers and marketers to give awareness to people concerning the qualities of the locally-made Adire.
